Singer Cliff Richard, aged 85, underwent treatment for prostate cancer, the Brit revealed this Monday, December 15th. To the television program Good Morning Britainfrom ITV, said he received the diagnosis after undergoing a test before starting a tour.
“I was going to Australia and New Zealand and the prosecutor said, ‘We need your insurance, so you need to get a test’. They found out I had prostate cancer,” said Sir Cliff Richardstating that the disease was detected early and did not spread to other parts of the body. “The luck was that it wasn’t very old and it hadn’t metastasized. It hadn’t spread, nothing to the bones or anything like that,” he said, quoted by the BBC.
“I don’t know if it will come back. We can’t know these types of things, but we need, without a doubt, I’m convinced, to do exams, to do check-ups”, emphasized the singer in conversation with journalist Dermot Murnaghan, who, in June, revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer.
In the interview, Cliff Richard considered the absence of a national screening program for the disease “absolutely ridiculous” and, in that sense, said he wanted to work with the king to improve cancer screening in men.
Monarch Charles III, remember, reported last week that treatments against the cancer he is facing will be reduced next year. The king stressed that the “effective intervention” was due to the early stage diagnosis of the disease.
“We all deserve to have the same opportunity to get tested and start treatment as soon as possible. I’ve only been dealing with cancer for a year, but every time I talk to someone, this topic comes up, and that’s why I think our government needs to listen to us”, defended the British singer, interpreter of hits such as We Don’t Talk Anymore, Summer Holiday e The Young Ones.
On the social network Facebook, Cliff Richard discussed the interview he gave to the TV show Good Morning Britainsaying that it was a way of being able to talk about his experience. “This was my opportunity to share the news that, at the end of 2024, I was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer after a routine examination. I underwent successful treatment and have since been discharged”, he summarized and then emphasized: “Diagnosis and early detection save lives.”
