The Portuguese will pay more this year for Christmas dinner, with the prices of cod and turkey increasing by 10.48% and 11.53%, respectively, since the beginning of the year, according to DECO data sent to Lusa.

Between January 1st and December 10th of this year, the price of a kilogram (kg) of large cod rose from 15.27 euros to 16.87 euros.

During this period, the price of cod increased by 10.48%, that is, it became more expensive by 1.60 euros.

The price paid for large cod has undergone several fluctuations over the last year, with its maximum (16.87 euros) being reached on December 10th, while the lowest price (14.70 euros) was recorded on March 5th.

Next year is also unlikely to bring good news for cod consumers, as the Norwegian Fisheries Council (NSC) and the Cod Industry Association (AIB) have already anticipated new worsening conditions for Lusa in 2026, in light of the reduction in quotas.

Similar to what happened with cod, the price of a kg of turkey legs also increased this year, going from 5.28 euros to 5.69 euros, thus registering an increase of 0.59 euros (11.53%).

The highest price for a turkey leg was on December 3rd (5.70 euros) and the lowest (5.02 euros) on August 6th.

Turkey steak will not be a more economical option, since the same quantity increased by 15.54% or 1.27 euros between January and December.

Data collected by DECO, the Portuguese association for consumer protection, shows that, this year, the price of turkey steaks rose from 8.18 euros to 9.46 euros.
